Happy New Year! Hello 2007!
January 2nd, 2007Welcome to the New year! Like many, I’ve made my New Year’s resolutions list:
New Year’s Resolutions:
1. Exercise more
2. Lose weight
3. Eat and stay Healthy
4. Save money
5. Spend more time with my kids, Jasmine and Caleb
6. Cook at home more often; learn new recipes
Do some of these resolutions sound familiar? Are they on your list? It seems that the top 4 appear on my list year after year!
In the little spare time I have away from my kids, I get a chance to kick back and relax and read. My favorite reading materials are Alternative Medicine magazines (which I highly recommend), Chiropractic magazines and of course, Dora the Explorer and Disney Princess books.
I found some interesting articles to help achieve the resolutions mentioned above.
In Today’s Chiropractic Lifestyle magazine (Dec/ Jan 2007), there is a wonderful article by Amy Selby titled “20 Fat Loss Secrets”.
The top 5 that I like and is the most easiest are:
1. “Drink a gallon of bubbly or cold water each day. This will burn 150 calories of energy to heat the cold water to body temperature.” (This will also purify your body of toxins, metabolic waste, etc.)
2. “Avoid eating sugar or starches (bread, potatoes, etc) a few hours before bedtime. This can decrease growth hormone released at night and store unwanted calories as fat. ” (My solution: don’t go grocery shopping on an empty stomach and buy only necessities!) Avoid frozen foods, foods in a box or can and junk food. Budget and make a grocery list of only the foods you plan on cooking/ eating. This method has saved me tons of money in the past year. (Fruit roll ups, chips, ice cream…. those are like $2-3 each!)
3. “Dress and sleep cool! The cooler you stay, the more heat your body must produce to keep you warm, and this mean more calories burned! Shivering burns triple the calories as sweating.”
4. “Avoid excessive amounts of exercise. Too much exercise can cause hormonal imbalances, which can cause muscle wasting and aid in fat storage.” Too much exercise have also been shown to decrease your immune system and increase cell damage due to free radicals. 30 minutes to an hour per day of moderate exercise (such as biking, running or brisk walking) is recommended. Rountine is KEY!
5. “Eat slowly and stop when you are no longer hungry, before you feel full.” We, Americans, tend to rush through our food due to our hectic lifestyles- the Europeans and Asians take 2 hour lunches! Another way to also prevent overeating is share your plate when ordering at a restaurant or eat half and take the rest to-go. Restaurant servings tend to be huge! A serving is only the size of a deck of cards! This method will also help you save $$$$!
My 2 cents: don’t forget to take a multi-vitamin! Allergy and flu/cold season is here! Being sick during the holidays is not my idea of fun! (Before you run and get a flu shot, please see this video here: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=2163175142473074044
The foods that we eat today are not as nutrient rich as it was 20-30 years ago. Our environment is filled with more pollutants and toxins… There is an article in Alternative Medicine magazine (Jan 07 issue, pg 20).
“Allergic disease rates have skyrocketed over the past few decades, and the public and researchers have pointed to a slew of likely environmental culprits. Now you can add plastic to that list, particularly the ingredient di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), which is pretty much ubiquitious in air, water, and most everyone’s body. DEHP has been linked to childhood asthma, and a recent study in Environmental Health Perspectives found that the plastic made allergic reactions in mice much worse……….The strong adverse reaction to extremely low doses of DEHP led to the researchers to conclude that it ‘can be responsible for the recent increase in atopic dermatitis,’ a chronic skin condition often referred to as eczema.”
Nutritional supplements such as vitamins, minerals, enzymes, etc. are NOT regulated by the Food and Drug Adminstration (FDA). Therefore, Joe Co. can put a label on it’s product and claims it heals all diseases, when is actually does not. Also, most nutritional companies do not implement a quality control system- this means your vitamins that you are taking may NOT be absorbed and the outcome is what I like to call “very expensive urine”.
In a recent independent study, Lyle Mc Williams, studied and analyzed many popular multi-vitamin formulas for it’s completeness, absorption rate, etc. It found the top multi-vitamin on the market is USANA. The only problem with USANA, is that it is available to members only. (Kind of like a pyramid setting). However, it is rated 96.4% (out of 100) and costs more significantly.
The second highest ranked multi-vitamin is Douglas Laboratories at 95.4%. It is available ONLY to licenses healthcare professionals. (please see www.douglaslaboratories.com). It is dairy, yeast, color, and preservative free too! Perfect for vegetarians! The company itself sends out their products to an independent company for a CERTIFICATE OF ANALYSIS which determines the purity of the product, how well and how long it absorbs into the body; among other things to ensure the best quality of their products!
By the way, if you’re wondering about your multi-vitamin- contact or email me.
FYI- Centrum Performance scored 5.2% out of 100%, GNC Mega Greens scored 46%, and Equate or store brands scored 4.9%)
